Auto Professionals Australia Warns of Fraudulent Car Sales Websites
Highly Organised International Gang Targeting Australian Car Buyers Online
SYDNEY – December 7, 2010 — Today, Auto Professionals Australia (APA) released a general public warning of the profusion of fraudulent car sales websites claiming to be automotive brokerage and/or escrow agents.
APA President Sean Morahan said “The fraudulent sites’ owners are targeting victims via advertisements on other car sales sites like carsales.com.au and carpoint.com.au. Fake ‘sellers’ send enquiries to a website that claims to be an ‘automotive escrow / buying agent service. It offers to hold the buyer’s money in trust until they receive, and are happy with, the car. The fraudsters are only contactable via e-mail or a contact form on their fraudulent sites. The fraudulent sites request payment via unsecure methods including Western Union money transfer. Unsuspecting ‘buyers’ send the money and no car arrives. Subsequent attempts to contact the websites’ owners are unanswered.”
Car buyers should be wary of any seller insisting that they deal through a broker or escrow agent, especially on the internet.
Scammers Have Registered Hundreds of Web Sites
Research reveals that these scammers are highly organised and have been running this scam for years in the USA and Europe with hundreds of websites, mostly using the same template design. They can create a new scam website in a matter of minutes, usually the same day that they register the new website name. We have traced records of them registering large batches of websites at a time.
Many of the fake sites traced by APA’s research are registered in Russia, but listed to fake names and addresses in the USA, Europe and Australia.
Many ads that lead to these sites are placed on carsales.com.au and similar websites are being paid for with stolen (and therefore untraceable) credit cards.
Notably, the scam websites observed by us have not had any phone number, nor any form of physical street or postal address. Buyers should not, however, assume that any details listed on a suspicious site are correct.
Scammers Use Real Details to Support the Scam
To make the scam more convincing, the scammers copy real ads from car sales websites and change a few details. They also use the names and/or details of real people to make the scam more convincing. Several examples of the scam have advised buyers that the seller is in the Australian Armed Forces, is about to be deployed overseas and so is unavailable to show the car and that is why he is using the ‘escrow service’. The scammers also falsely claim that they are the registrants of real Australian Business Numbers (ABNs) and in some cases, encourage buyers to verify them on ABN registration websites. This does not prove that the scammers are who they say they are, but merely confirms that a business exists (which the scammers have no connection with).
The scam websites also contain multiple warnings of online car scams and fake testimonials from ‘happy’ buyers.
Example screen shots of some of the scam websites are below:

Hi,
Sorry for taking so long to reply, I’m work for the Department of Defence
and I was transferred to a new military base in WA. I am providing
Pre-Afghanistan Deployment Training (Desert Training).
If you are still interested in buying my car, I’m asking $3900 (I’ve lowered
the price because I’m running out of time). The car is road worthy. Rego
until Oct 2011. It has a clear title, very well maintained, always garage
kept, excellent condition, runs and sounds 100% perfect with no leaks or
noises. Engine starts right up, sounds great and there are no strange
noises. No hail damage. I have to sell the car as fast as I can because in
three weeks I will be deployed to Afghanistan and I’ll stay there for a
while. I intend to buy a new one when I get back home.
No need to worry about the car because it is here with me at the military
base and I can ship it anywhere in Australia.
I also need to know if you have the cash to buy the car, because there are a
lot of interested buyers. You don’t have to worry about the distance. You’ll
love the car, I can guarantee you that! I’ve attached photos at:
Details:
Registration#: PPA250, 138000 Km’s. Rego is until Oct 2011. Just had it
serviced. Mechanically A1.

I was recommended this web site by my cousin. You are wonderful! Thanks!
My husband saw an ad for a 1992 bmw for $2900 on carsales.com with an incorrect phone number, so he sent the seller an email.
Carsales removed the ad and warned us that the ad had been removed but only said it was not removed because of an incorrect phone number.
The “seller” contacted my husband back saying he had been moved from N.S.W. to W.A. as he works for the RAAF and is about to be deployed overseas, he sent us photos of “himself” in uniform and a copy of his RAAF I.D.. He was posing as David Lobard.
We were searching online to see if it was a scam and finally he mentioned we should use an escrow service recommended by carsales.com. I googled “escrow carsales” and came across this page. Thank you..
This guy was very educated in the services available to defense force personnel who have been posted! be careful!
This is the email I received… name used David Lobard

I was about to send money but luckily did some research and found this site!!!! Thanks
Scott, thank you for returning here and posting the warning above about the scammers hacking your daughter’s e-mail account. That is a great example of how tricky and relentless these guys are.
Steph, Roland and Benny: thanks very much for your comments and thanks especially to Kevin and ksebastian for giving us more of the latest info on the automobile escrow scam.
I have seen carsales and other sites making big efforts to combat these scammers as it is bad for their business and they are trying to help their real customers, but these scammers keep coming up with more and more tricks to try and get round every check put in place.
Education is probably the best prevention: a reminder to everyone to follow the steps in the orange box under the scam website pictures nearer the top of this page. The more people we can make aware of this scam in a short time, the less chance we have of these scammers continuing this practice.

Thank you so much!!! I never could have guessed how complicated this scam is. The latest scam site is www-saferevs-australia.com.
Hello there, You’ve done an incredible job. I will certainly link here from my facebook and personally suggest to my friends. I am sure they’ll be benefited from seeing this web site.
OK so I can’t copy and paste copies of the emails the so called Sergent has sent us (apparently the comment is too “spammy”) but I can confirm that the scammer was unable to be contacted via phone, had a different email address every time they sent a reply and spelling errors in the emails.
Everything that everyone else has posted on this site is identical to what the scammers have said to us
Thanks heaps for putting up this site guys…saved us $8500
Hi guys, after seeing an amazing Holden Astra VXR 2006 at only 86,000ks for $13500 and in Melbourne? I wanted to jump on it asap! I sent an enquiry via Carsales.com.au. The next day, I received an email from carsales stating that it was a fradulent add!
I laughed to myself and left it there. However the gutless fellow decides to email my email BACK and state that his in the army , however, in the email it states his name is David Barol and has attached imageshack photos of himself and his ID card? Who does that?!!? However in the sender details of the email it states the senders name is Paul Armstrong?! Very confusing.. here is what he decided to lie to me about..
G`day,
Thank you for the email and sorry for the dealy but i was very busy with my job. As you can see in the photos the car is in excellent condition. I never smoked inside the car and has never been involved in accidents, no scratchs or damage. The car has road worthy certificate, clear title, very well maintained, runs and sounds 100% perfect. Just had it serviced. The car comes with all the papers including the service book. My last asking price is $13200 (I’ve lowered the price because I’m running out of time). Let me know if you are interested to purchase and i will give you more details.
Thank you

However cudos for Carsales.com.au about getting back to me asap for the car being a fraud.
I would also like to thank you guys for such a great and informative website! I would have gone ahead and continued communication if it wasnt for googleing this fraudsters so called ‘details’!

Hi guys, we have another attempt at fraud from these guys. I think they understood that I wanted nothing to do with them.. so they went onto the next attack of pretending to be carsales.com.au.. the email is below.. please take very carful note of the text down the bottom and the literacy and how poor it is. “you were interested , but our seller log on his account with another ip address and we were afraid that someone else had hijacked his account” – I am 100% sure carsales dont use HIJACKED. Bloody pathetic I tell you! I dont understand the nerve on these human beings, its unacceptable. Do it in your own country not Australia!!!

Not blaming u guys i was stupid enough to send the money just wish there was more publicity on this matter
Hi Sel (and everyone else) – I look after the twitter and facebook accounts for Carsales among other things. As you correctly suspect, that email isn’t from us. For something like that, most likely you’d get a phone call from us, or at least some better syntax and grammar.
Looks like some great advice on this page already – but can I add, if you suspect something, then ask the site you are buying the car from (us or our competitors) or the APA. We’ve either heard the scam before, or can add it to our list and inform the next person it is tried on. The “I’m overseas currently” or “on an oil rig” are common.
We don’t have a recommended Escrow service, and step 3 of our buying guide says you should always try the car first. (http://helpcentre.carsales.com.au/scam-defence/buyer-safety/)
I have just been reading through the other posts and seen a lot of people getting scammed by these scum. I enjoy finding them and wasting their time. String them on for as long as I can. Give them false info. Generally get their hopes up before I dump em. I think we should all do this. Ive had stories like working on oil rigs , Christian missionary, deployed soldiers and gone overseas to live. One even offered to send a bottle of scotch from Scotland, how nice of him. Never saw the scotch though. So we should all be wasting their time. Here is the email I have of one going at the moment if everyone wants to read and make an enquirey. Have fun.
Latest site is: www-australiancarmovers.com/

G`day,
My name is Ravio Barab. The price i want for my car is $3,700 AUD. I am a christian missionary and i travel around the country to raise funds in local churches so we can help the children from poor countries with clothes and medicaments. 4 days ago i left to Darwin NT with my missionary work.
The car is road worthy and also has a long rego, clear title, very well maintained, always garage kept, excellent condition, runs and sounds 100% perfect with no leaks or noises.
I need to sell the car fast because in 4 weeks I will travel to Liberia to deliver clothes and medicaments to the children and I’ll stay there for a while. I’ll buy a new one upon return.
No need to worry about the car because it is here with me and I can ship it anywhere in Australia (i will pay the shipping charges). You don’t have to worry about the distance. You’ll love the car, I can guarantee you that!
Just had it serviced. Mechanically A1.

Thanks for commenting Sel, James, Heath and Julian.
Julian, as I have warned several times in comments on this post, I think it is a bad idea to ‘mess’ directly with these scammers. By ‘messing’ with them, you give them your IP address, e-mail address and probably a lot of other personal information that you are not aware of. We are aware of scammers getting more information from people and causing them even more grief than is listed on these pages. They are running a multi-million dollar scam and they are very, very good at it. Far better than you can imagine. The largest waste of time in doing what you suggest (messing with them) would be the waste of your own time and you are putting yourself at further risk with ruthless criminals. Don’t do it.
James, I understand your frustration. Researching and publishing these warnings has cost me a LOT of time and money. As well as maintaining these warning pages, I have reported the scam to several state police fraud squads, to scamwatch, to NSW fair trading, to carsales and the other websites where the scammers advertise. I have reported it to several TV programs (including the interview with Today Tonight on this page). I have spent hours posting warnings on many other websites. So we aren’t going to engage in illegal spamming in the hope that it warns some people.
If you want more publicity on this matter, create the publicity. Start by doing everything listed in the orange box below the scam screenshots on this page. You’re in Ballarat? Get the story into your local paper with a link to these warnings. I would also welcome constructive comments and ideas on other ways that YOU can publicise these warnings.

Hi Sean,
I’m back!
I wrote earlier, re: my girlfriend looking at buying a car.
Now they have moved into the “purchasing” side of things… obviously in an attempt to obtain bank and personal details.
Please see below their e-mail and my reply I sent to them …
The other e-mail was from Tony Stefan (tonystef32@yahoo.com), exactly the same e-mail.
*****
How’s about get stuffed!
Consider your e-mail along with Tony Stefan added to the long list of people trying to con others out of money!
You shifty rats… You think I am that stupid?!
OMG, you should have at least tried to change the message a bit… Like it already doesn’t look suspicious, let alone sending it to the same person twice in one day.
Try another sucker
Cheers,
Ben

Hi Sean,
Thanks to Auto Professionals for publishing this information.
I Googled some of the references and found you before I sent any money. Sometimes you gotta love the internet!
Thank you for these warnings – you’ve saved a friend of mine. Good job!
We were almost scammed. For Sale advertised through Gumtree.com.au was a Harley Davidson Dyna Glide 2011 Custom FXDWG. But seller – A Surgeon (Annabelle Barker) had spent 8 years in Aus and was now back in the UK but had left behind the bike with ESCROW PACIFIC www-escrow-pacific.com. (She) insisted that she would only deal through this ESCROW site. Bargain of a deal … $23,0000 bike for $13,700. Too good to be true. And it is. Advised Annabelle that we were going to the bank yesterday…today the add on Gumtree cannot be found ….disappeared. Allllmost got us. Thanks to Scam Fraud alert sites like this, we decided that this WAS a scam and did not transfer any money.

Kind regards,
My daughter received an email from a “Calvin Barkley” keen to sell a Holden Astra 2002 on Carsales.com.au. The car was in Albany and would be transported by Elite Shipping (free of charge) with a 5 day inspection period. The money was to be deposited with Western Union upfront and held in trust until after the 5-day period. The invoice looked far too complicated and wordy and thankfully a friend of hers sent her this article, which confirmed our doubts. If it sounds too good to be true…..it probably is.
Hi
I had exactly the same email luckily I did not act please find to follow

what a scum bag – however this guy didn’t even give me a name…

SO ANGRY RIGHT NOW!!!
Hi,
Sorry for taking so long to reply, I work in the army for Royal Australian Air Force and I was transferred to a new military base in Western Australia. I train troops Pre Deployment for Afghanistan.
If you are still interested in buying my car. My price would be $2,900 (I’ve lowered the price because I’m running out of time). The car is road worthy, long Rego. It has a clear title, very well maintained, always garage kept, excellent condition, runs and sounds 100% perfect with no leaks or noises. Engine starts right up, sounds great and there are no strange noises. No hail damage. I have to sell the car as fast as I can because in three weeks I will be deployed to Afghanistan and I’ll stay there for a while. I intend to buy a new one when I get back home.
No need to worry about the car because it is here with me at the military base and I can ship it anywhere in Australia.
I also need to know if you have the cash to buy the car, because there are a lot of interested buyers. You don’t have to worry about the distance. You’ll love the car, I can guarantee you that!

2006 Honda Jazz for $4900 sounds to good to be true…
got this as a reply to an enquiry!
DODGE DODGE DODGE!
the add on Gumtree cannot be found ….disappeared! suprsie suprise!
these people are just pigs!
Hi, I see you are interested of my car, first of all I have to tell you that the vehicle is in good condition, has no technical damage at all,no scratches or dents, no hidden defects, no smoking.
The car has Rego paid till next year. Also has full service history and service book.
The reason I am selling the car is because I really have to not because I don’t like it anymore.
I have worked in Australia for the last 2 years and I purchased the car there.
My company wanted me back home, so currently I’m in London, United Kingdom. I got the car home with me and the car is here in UK now. The car is still registered in Australia and has Australian papers and plates. I decided that is better to sell it because the tax to register it here is very expensive and it is a pity to keep such a car and not to use it. The price I am looking for my car is AU $4900 including the shipping costs, insurance and delivery to Australia.
You will not have to pay any additional taxes for this.
Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have.
We can use a shipping company for this deal, the process is very easy and I have just bought a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee and this is why I know how it works.
This company will handle the delivery of the car and also they will handle all the registration papers. If we will use it you will have 5 days to inspect the car before you decide to buy it.
I will pay delivery! The delivery time will be around 7 days and the car will be delivered at your home address. In this time you will receive the tracking number of the transaction so you can use it to check the status on the company website.
Let me explain you the whole process:
First I will need your details, full name and address. As soon as I get the info from you I will take the car and go to the shipping company to transfer it in their custody. I will pay all the shipping charges. After the car is in their custody they will send you a confirmation and also payment instructions. They work as an escrow service and will hold the payment during the 5 days period for inspection. After the payment is confirmed to them, they will get the car to your home address and will also give you the documents of registration and the car will be left in your custody, in this period you can inspect the car, take it to a service for inspection and drive test it. After the 5 days period is over the shipping company will come to you and if you decided to keep the car you will transfer the documents on your name and after the car is registered on your name they will release the payment to me. If you decide not to buy the car they will get the car back and will send you a full refund of the payment.
Thank you
Mark Wilson

Hi there,
Sorry for the late reply, the car is still for sale. I’m serving in the Australian Army and I’ve been transferred to Anglesea Barracks, military base in Tasmania where I am doing pre Afghanistan Deployment Training. I have a 12 month mission ahead of me and this is the main reason for selling the car. It would be a pity to keep the it in the garage for so long. I would definitely not sell it if it wasn’t for this.
The car is in excellent condition, never smoked inside, very well maintained, both the interior and the exterior. It is a 6 litre automatic petrol with just under 87000kms. Never had any problems with it, no accidents. It comes with full service history.
If you are still interested reply with your questions. I dropped the price to $15900(negotiable) including the delivery to your location because I need to sell the car as soon as possible.
Cheers,
David

Hi Austin,
As I previously told you, I am camped in Hobart, Tassie. The car is also here, in a local warehouse, ready to be delivered to the next owner. I really can’t handle personally this sale, so I will sell the car through www-safecarmovers.com.au, the shipping company that has the car in custody now. They offer a great service for situations like this, acting as a third party. They can deliver the car at your place and you will have 5 days to inspect it. If you are not happy with it you will cancel the deal and will be fully refunded.
You can read more about it here www-safecarmovers.com.au/how_it_works.php. Let me know if we can seal the deal this way. You can also check that the car is in their custody and to see a brief inspection report here: www-safecarmovers.com.au/inspection.php with this code: 4F1F6BC6C47EC.
If you agree with my terms please register with Safecarmovers and let’s get the ball rolling! The payment method is bank transfer. If you don’t find my proposal suitable, good luck finding another car!
Cheers,
David
Thank you so much for the advice on how to avoid these scams
The site (www-safecarmovers.com.au) looks really professional and one could almost be convinced it is genuine. Same story soldier being deployed to Afghanistan in Darwin doing training. He has copied ad of carsales, reduced price by $12k and explained the car was now in Darwin located in the safe car movers warehouse.
Asked to send $36k via the carmovers escrow service and the car would then be freighted to Adelaide.
I am in the car industry and had to convince the buyer (brother in law) that it was a scam.
They only way he would believe it was when I sent him a link to this site. Well Done Guys, he nearly lost his $36k.
So glad I found this site. We had someone selling us a rodeo for $11,000 via www-safecarmovers.com.au – from darwin about to be deployed… Thanks!!!
