On 29/8/1885 Gottlieb Daimler applied for a patent for the first ever road vehicle with a combustion engine. This first vehicle was similar to a motorcycle, had wooden spokes wheels and was equipped with a high speed combustion engine. This 264 cc engine delivered 0.5 HP. In 1885 this was sufficient to accelerate the ‘riding car’ to a maximum speed of 12 km/h.
